The slot car of choice for NTRA drag racing is a vintage Aurora ThunderJet chassis or a modern Johnny Lightning/Auto World clone. These quirky cars have a horizontal "pancake" armature and an array of gears that transfer torque to the rear wheels. Depending on the class rules, typical modifications include low-resistance armatures, braided pickup shoes and shunts to improve electrical conductivity, traction magnets to increase downforce, silicone-foam tires for grip, and wheelie bars. Modern inline-motor chassis (right) offer superior performance but less charm than the vintage '60s-style chassis.
