6 Prior to installing the scattershield to the adapter plate, check and set the starter pinion gear to flywheel backlash at 0.010-0.030 inch. After the scattershield is attached, it is impossible to set the backlash. |
7 This is the proper way for the throwout bearing to be installed in the clutch fork. Lightly grease the outer race of the throwout bearing prior to installation. |

8 Loosen the rear of the subframe to remove the old transmission crossmember and install the new one. Replace the body mount bushings if they are worn or old. | |
Install Tips
- The block plate for the scattershield must go on before the flywheel. Torque each flywheel bolt to 65 lb-ft. Always use a new pilot bushing.
- It's easier to fill the Tremec TKO with 3 quarts of GM syncromesh transmission fluid before installing the trans, but you must install the slip yoke to prevent losing the fluid out the tailshaft!
- Always use a clutch alignment tool or a dummy shaft and torque the pressure plate and clutch assembly to the flywheel at 35 lb-ft. Since the distributor was removed, remember to mark the flywheel position because the flywheel will definitely move when you torque the bolts.
- The transmission is secured with four 1⁄2-inch bolts torqued to 35 lb-ft. Draw the bolts up evenly since this seats the alignment ring on the front of the Tremec and ensures proper alignment of the input shaft and the crankshaft.
- With the interior removed, this is the time to add insulation. B-Quiet "brown bread" was used and was very easy to install. B-Quiet can also furnish thicker insulation if you are planning to enhance sound attenuation.

9 With the engine tilted, use the tilt mechanism on the transmission jack to align the face of the Tremec with the scattershield. There's also a centering ring that must be used between the McLeod Scattershield and the five-speed. |
10 The transmission crossmember may now be installed. Leave the four subframe bolts loose until you have ensured the alignment of the transmission mount bolts, then secure all of the bolts. |

11 There is minimal working room under the dash to install the new clutch/brake pedal assembly. Keep the clutch pedal as close to the firewall as possible. There are new bushings included with the pedal assembly. |
12 Here's the finished floor after we repaired the mild rust damage on the passenger side. We also replaced the rag joint on the steering shaft when we installed the new AGR steering box. |

14 Our driveshaft had to be shortened 3⁄4 inch to accommodate the Tremec, and Larry Pollard at LP Gear handled that easily. Your application may be slightly different, so always measure. Pollard also rebuilt the driveshaft with all new U-joints and the new Tremec-compatible yoke. |
