Saved By the Bellhousing - McLeod's Universal Bellhousing Kit
Steel pins are used to align all of the pieces of the modular bellhousing system. Varying lengths are available to accommodate the different spacer ring thicknesses. The pins also provide a means of aligning the transmission's input shaft with the engine's crankshaft by using eccentric inserts to position the cap. With conventional bellhousings, this must be done using offset dowel pins in the engine's bellhousing flange.
First, the proper length pin is inserted into the bellhousing, and then the spacer ring--shown here alongside the pin--is slipped into position over the pins.
With the spacer ring in place, the eccentric inserts are then set into the ends of the pins. The cap will then fit over the eccentrics.
Once the cap is in place, the eccentric inserts can be rotated with a flat-blade screwdriver to slightly alter the position of the cap during the truing phase of installation. This involves test-fitting the bellhousing assembly to the engine that will be used so that the centerline of the crankshaft can be centered with the hole in the cap that positions the gearbox's bearing retainer. This will ensure proper alignment with the input shaft of the transmission during final assembly.
McLeod also offers a wide variety of manual transmission-related parts and accessories, including many items to facilitate trans swaps, like this universal, integral hydraulic throwout bearing. This combines the bearing with the clutch release function, eliminating the need for any external clutch linkage. The McLeod unit uses braided fluid lines and leakproof fittings for trouble-free operation.
For those using GM-based T56 six-speeds with hydraulic clutch linkage, the factory master cylinder is often a problem, as the plastic unit is prone to failure if misaligned and is not rebuildable. The McLeod replacements for the Camaro (left) and Corvette are steel, more durable and forgiving, and the Camaro unit has an adjustable output fitting position to accommodate non-stock applications.
For those sticking with mechanical linkage, McLeod also has this simple but trick GM-style clutch release arm pivot, shown on the right. The McLeod piece has a broader radius than the stock piece, which helps to prevent binding of the clutch fork. It's also threaded to provide adjustable height.
