Ford’s Super Cobra Jet head is sold bare or with valves, springs, retainers, guideplates for 5/16-inch pushrods, or rocker-arm studs. Other 429/460 guideplates won’t work due to the new head’s revised valve angles. Ford sells the new guideplates separately in kit PN M-6566-SCJ.

Designed to take advantage of the latest improvements in cam and valvetrain technology, Comp Xtreme Energy cams have an aggressive lobe design that promotes better throttle response down low and more power upstairs than other cams with similar 0.050-inch tappet-lift duration.

SCJ exhaust ports (right) retain the larger CJ exit profile, which is slightly taller than the standard 429/460 port (left). Bottom line: If your CJ headers fit before, they’ll still fit, but some small-tube headers designed for standard 429/460 exhaust flanges may not fully seal up.

The old iron head (left) as well as Ford’s previous aluminum CJ head have chambers that locate the valves close to the cylinder walls. The new heart-shaped, fast-burn SCJ chamber (right) has centrally located valves and repositioned spark plugs that are biased towards the exhaust side.

Although SCJ intake ports (left) are considerably larger than standard 429/460 ports (right)...

...the SCJ entry location remains a carryover from the ’71 CJ/SCJ design, so intakes that fit original CJ-style heads also bolt up to the new heads. Use a CJ-style intake gasket (Fel-Pro PN 1231).

You’ll need to verify piston-to-valve clearance with the new head’s relocated valves. The intake valve is the one most likely to hit. This photo shows a Ford 514 crate engine piston modified with the new intake valve location.
