In addition to contaminating the weld, the floor surrounding our patch panels may have varied wildly in thickness, depending on how much it had rusted. Look at the difference in thickness just in this small section of the truck’s floor. What is normal 18-gauge steel in some areas is more like 22- or 24-gauge, rusty steel in others. The settings required to weld 18-gauge steel burned right through the floorpan in several areas, and we had to turn the voltage down on our welder to compensate.
