Last month we tested Ford Racing's new Boss 302 with three different intake manifolds to help you choose the correct one for your next Ford project. In the end, the Weiand Action Plus made the most usable power with the stock crate engine. The final intake manifold had Teflon-treated rotors and made a whistling sound. We saved it for this issue.

The Boss 302 engine comes with everything except the intake, carb, ignition, exhaust, and the various accessory pulleys. Using a Weiand Action Plus and a set of Hooker 15/8-inch Mustang headers, the engine made 345 hp at 6,100 and 332 lb-ft at 4,300 rpm.

The Weiand 174 comes with a manifold base, 10-rib pulleys with a belt, a bolt kit, and of course, the blower itself. The 174 will fit any Ford small-block with an 8.200 deck height-that means 289 to 347 cid, not the 351W.

Installation is as simple as bolting the lower manifold to the heads and bolting the blower housing to the manifold. It is designed to fit engines with up to a three-groove crank pulley. If you are installing the system on a '79-and-later Mustang or Capri, with a single serpentine drive for all the engine accessories, you'll need to use the adapter kit PN 90684 that is conveniently included in the kit.

The Boss 302 uses an early-style ('65 to '69) 3-inch balancer that is drilled for the three and four-bolt pulley pattern. If you are using an early block or a Boss balancer, you will need a pulley spacer kit (PN 90683) to properly align the blower pulley. Be warned that the spacer is only drilled with three boltholes, so it might not match your lower accessory drive pulley.

Because of its size, the 174 has no EGR provision and no pop-off plate to protect the blower from backfires. Instead, the 10-rib Poly-V belt slips to protect the blower rotors. Larger blowers require Gilmer or cog belts for traction and therefore require a pop-off plate as well.

The lower V-belt pulley, spacer, lower drive spacer, and lower drive pulley all bolt to the balancer using the three bolts. Since our lower pulley was from a '73 Ranchero, it had the wrong bolt pattern. We had to borrow a set of early Mustang three-bolt pulleys from Alistair Miller at Millerspeed.

This is the '70-and-later 3.950-inch balancer that has four boltholes and does not require a spacer. These will be the most common. Be sure to check your balancer before you order the blower.

Because the Ford supercharger uses an offset drive housing to clear the distributor, the system uses a fixed idler pulley and bracket that bolt to the bottom of the blower snout-and a spring-loaded idler. To adjust the idler tension, you must loosen the nut on the threaded rod on the back of the idler and let the pulley tension the belt. Measure the distance between the pulley support and the end of the fixed tube of the idler. If it is between 0.300 and 0.500 (a little less than 1/2 inch), then you can use thread locker to secure the mounting bolts to the idler support plate. The plate has several holes to dial in this adjustment.

Ford 302 small-blocks typically come with one of three water pump styles. Pre-'70 pumps measure 5.420 inches from the back of the casting to the face of the hub and have a passenger-side inlet. Later pumps have a driver-side inlet, measure 5.700 inches, and can be either standard or reverse rotation. The Boss 302 comes with a reverse-rotation water pump, which is a problem if you are not running a serpentine system.
