The flat bar with the dial indicator is used to determine the relative block deck heights from side to side. Running the dial indicator along the block deck will give a measurement of how far out of square the deck is with respect to the reference plate. A machinist's straightedge across the decks had shown that they were flat within a thousandth or so, but the dial indicator revealed that the decks were not the same height side to side and also out of square with the crank centerline. View Related Article
