409 Chevy Engine 454 Crank
Before the 454 crank can go into the 409 block, the mains must be turned down 0.250 inch, from 2.748 to 2.498 inches. The pen points to the shadow left after the 11/44-inch-diameter reduction. Notice the gentle radius transition from journal to cheek that eliminates stress risers common to 90-degree parting lines. Crankshaft strength is not compromised.
409 Chevy Engine Turning 454 Crank
Besides normal precision balancing, the only other crankshaft machine work involves turning the 454 crank snout down to 1.250 inches so an externally balanced small-block Chevy 400 damper can be used. Remember, later '91-up 454 cranks are no-go due to their one-piece rear main seal and its noncompatibility with the 409 block.
409 Chevy Engine Added Swing Arc 454 Camshaft
The added swing arc of the 454 crankshaft moves the connecting rods closer to the bottoms of the cylinder bores. Small notches must be added to clear the reciprocating assembly.
