The heat-transfer qualities of 4130 chrome-moly steel are a lot different from those of the mild-steel plates we were welding together previously. The chrome-moly tubing required less current (heat) to melt, and the window between too little and too much heat was narrower than for mild steel. As a result, we burned through the tube on the first pass. Another nice feature of TIG welding is that you can easily repair a hole by gradually building up and filling in the gap with extra filler rod. View Related Article
