Camshafts- Three-Way Cam Lobe Shootout

Camshafts Camshaft Parts
With the lifters, it's a little easier to tell a flat-tappet hydraulic (right) from the hydraulic roller (middle) and the mechanical roller lifter (left).
Camshafts Titanium Retainer
We used titanium retainers on all the springs in this test because of the rather high engine speeds. The lighter retainers make a big difference in how well the spring controls the valve by reducing the weight of the spring/retainer package.
Camshafts Valve Springs
With all the attention paid to lower zinc levels in oil these days, we were careful to break in the flat-tappet hydraulic XE 284 cam by first removing the inner of the dual-spring package. This reduces the seat and open pressure, placing less load on the new cam and lifters during break-in only. Then we replaced the inner springs before dyno testing the package.
Camshafts Comp Pro Magnum Roller Rocket Arms
We also used a set of Comp Pro Magnum roller rocker arms, not only for their durability, but also because these rockers offer plenty of clearance even for the large 1.550-inch valvesprings.
Camshafts Camshaft
Swapping cams is easy with a three-piece timing chain cover. All we had to do was yank the intake and water pump, pull the harmonic balancer, pull all the pushrods and lifters, slide the cam out, and reverse the process. The roller cams did not require a serious break-in procedure, so that made the process even quicker.
