The Turbo 400 is the strongest of the GM three-speed automatics, but there are several tricks that can improve its reliability.

1955 Chevy Transmission Rebuild WOT Switch
A micro-switch on the carburetor triggered only at WOT increases line pressure to the trans, which increases shift harshness and shift points.

1955 Chevy Transmission Rebuild Standpipe
This is the innovative standpipe idea incorporated into Kilgore's standard deep-sump cast-aluminum Turbo 400 oil pan. The proper oil level is equal to the height of the standpipe.

Kilgore also modifies the stock Turbo 400 filter by sealing the stock top opening point and relocating it to the bottom rear of the filter to ensure the pickup is fully immersed in fluid at all times.
1955 Chevy Transmission Rebuild Sprang
This is the sprag in the Turbo 400 that failed. It is not damaged, but it has been pushed off center on the high-gear drum hub. This prevented the sprag from holding the high-gear drum in Second gear, which is why the trans failed.

Performing a proper burnout will add years to a Turbo 400's durability. The best plan is to avoid the 1-2 shift in the water. If that's not possible, shift early before putting heat into the tires in Second gear. Safeguarding the trans also requires driving out of the burnout using throttle and not lifting as the car exits the water. The shock of the tires hooking can also roll the sprag.
