For any motorhead, the garage-if you're lucky enough to have one-is a refuge, a sanctuary. It's where you go to create, to tinker, or maybe just to be alone, depending on the level of madness in your household. Trouble is, for many of us the garage can also be an absolute mess, and as such it's probably not as functional as it could be. We're packrats. You never know when you might need that spare pair of cylinder heads, a core block, the extra set of wheels and tires, and all that other smaller junk that just seems to accumulate. Pretty soon, whatever work area there once was is completely cluttered and/or inaccessible. Even if your garage does have a clear workspace, chances are it's an old cobbled bench, or maybe just a piece of plywood on sawhorses. It might get the job done, but does it entice you to start new projects? Not likely.
Knowing that it's becoming increasingly popular to spruce up the household garage, Craftsman has developed a line of products aimed at making such spaces more effective, as well as more attractive. The Craftsman Garage Storage Solutions system consists of a variety of cabinets and other work/storage units that can be used individually or in concert to transform your mundane and messy shop into the sort of area you'd be proud to show off. You're also likely get more done thanks to the improvement in organization.
We had a typical garage-a two car attached to the house-and while it was spacious, it had quickly become jammed with all manner of tools and parts so that even walking in was a chore. We longed to make it better, but there was an additional hurdle: It's a rental. That means no permanent alterations. Turns out that's not an issue with the Garage Solutions; just about all of it can be installed without making a mark on the garage itself. When it's time to move, we can just break it down and go, and the landlord will be none the wiser.
So, after clearing out some of the major obstacles, we ordered up the works, including the big bench and a bunch of cabinets. We also ordered some of the trick heavy-duty plastic floor tiles, which made the hideous 50-year-old concrete floor look like another room in the house. The tiles aren't permanent either. The transformation took about a day with a couple friends helping out, and now even the wife likes hangin' in the garage, which may prove to be a problem.
