The 9.5-inch diameter, 2.5-inch wide shoes fit directly in place of the stock linings. We reused our stock springs and hardware because they'd only been in service for 3,500 miles. If your stuff is ready for retirement, Praise offers a heavy-duty Trick Spring Kit that will allow the shoes to expand and retract reliably for thousands of miles.

If you opt not to have the drums turned, it's a good idea to scuff the braking surface with 400-grit sandpaper, followed by a liberal slathering of brake cleaner, before you reinstall them. The drums on our GS are integral to the hub, so we had to reinstall the outer bearing, washer, castle nut, and cotter pin on each side. If you're lucky, your drums will slide right off the hubs.
