Compression ratio aside, a good reason to have a small clearance volume is to tighten up the quench area (arrow). This is the portion of the combustion chamber that’s closest to the piston, and it causes a high-pressure, very turbulent rush of air/fuel mixture toward the spark plug just before it ignites.
