1967 Chevy C10 - Engine Rebuild

The Methodical Stroker

By , Photography by

The life of a dyno mule is tough and unforgiving. After scores of dyno pulls, followed by 12 months commuting around Los Angeles in our '67 C10, the Saturday Night Slayer Goodwrench engine was crying for a rebuild. When tested, it was producing acceptable compression and leak-down numbers, but it was fouling the plugs and burning a lot of oil, so we brought it to IMM Engine & Dyno for some CSI forensics, Car Craft–style. After diagnosing the problems, we rebuilt it, adding a stroker kit from Scat for extra grunt. Why are we calling this the Methodical Stroker? Because even though we changed a bunch of parts, we tried to keep specs like cam timing and compression similar, so that any power gains we see will likely be indicative of the increase in displacement and the little bit of porting IMM owner Brian Hafliger did to our cylinder heads. This combination will make some torque to help our C10 parts hauler a little more potent. Yes, we used some good parts for this build, but we have plans for this engine, which may include higher rpm, power-adders, or all of the above.

In line eight Packard 288 ci but looking for a 327 crank and rods. Also hoping a local guy can grind a hotter cam and maybe ad a later model 4bbl setup. All going in our '47 Packard Clipper. Want it to look pretty stock but squeeze a little extra power out of it. Might have a lead on a high compression head too!

I already did my 406 last year. Stock bottom end except new old stock forged pistons, ARP rod bolts and polished beams. Balanced of course, now curious what kinda power the stock rods and crank can handle.
