14. The rest of the engine assembly was straightforward. We used Crane’s hydraulic roller lifters, pushrods, and 1.6:1 ratio Gold Race rocker arms. Don’t make the same mistake we did when installing the rocker arms: One side of the fulcrum is machined slightly with a flat spot where the locknut seats. This author made the dumb mistake of installing some of them with the fulcrum spun over 180 degrees. Everything felt normal when we adjusted the valves, but the engine ran like it had a big miss when we tried to fire it. Apparently, the flipped-over fulcrums threw the geometry off just enough to interfere with normal valvetrain operation. It’s embarrassing to admit, but we feel it’s important to report. We just hope we can prevent you from doing the same thing.
