All new for 1962, the unitized B-Body Dart and Polara 500 arrived in September of 1961 and sold nearly 149,000 units, despite its controversial styling. Most were powered by the 225 Slant Six, poly-head 318, or 361 big-block. On May 1, Dodge added the 410- and 415hp A846 Maximum Performance 413 option, triggering construction of roughly 210 Ramchargers on Dodge’s Hamtramck, Michigan, line (another 300 or so Plymouth Super Stocks left the Lynch Road plant). If this purple people-eater is a factory Maxie, it’s worthy of massive magazine coverage. But is it really what it seems to be?
