What Is Rod Bolt Stretch and Why Do You Need to Do It?

b. This is the ARP rod bolt-stretch gauge (A), which is a high-tension dial indicator mounted on a fixture. The two small ends (B) fit into divots on both ends of the rod bolt.

If you must torque rod bolts, ARP recommends fully torquing each rod bolt three times with ARP moly lube. This burnishes the rod nut and rod cap interface, which reduces the friction present as the nut is tightened.
