All About Pulleys

Now you'll be able to explain to your buddies what pulley ratios mean and why your car overheats at every stoplight.

If air conditioning is in your street machine's future, consider VintageAir's Front-Runner Serpentine Drive System for both small- and big-blockChevys. This state-of-the-art factory-style system is expensive ataround $1,500, but keep in mind that it comes complete with ahigh-volume water pump, tensioner, brackets, power-steering bracket ordelete kit (does not supply the pump), pulleys, Powermaster alternator, and the A/C compressor.

Gm Factory Serpentine System
If you want a factory-style serpentine drive system for your small-blockChevy, GM Performance Parts offers this complete system that includesall the pulleys, brackets, and accessories including the A/C compressor, alternator, water pump, tensioner, and belt. If you couldn't care lessabout air conditioning, GMPP also has a non-air serpentine system.
Pulley System
Mixing pulleys from different manufacturers can cause problems. Sinceall pulleys may not be machined identically, it's not uncommon toexperience alignment issues that can cause premature belt wear or theconstant throwing of belts. Pick one company and stick with it.
Deep Groove Pulley
If you're constantly throwing V-belts from the alternator, a deep-groovepulley may be the answer. Deep-groove pulleys were used on many carsequipped with high-performance engines, but they only work as intendedif matched with the corresponding deep-groove alternator and water-pumppulleys. Without them, the belt will only get thrown elsewhere in thesystem.

Serpentine Belt System
Our Ford tow rig has been outfitted with a serpentine drive system thatwas salvaged off of a newer late-model F-250. You may be surprised atwhat you can find at the salvage yard. This type of conversion may be aneconomical alternative if you can piece the parts together to fit yourapplication.
Pulley Chart
A serpentine system must constantly have tension on the belt in order tofunction properly. Controlling the tension is done in one of two ways. Most factory systems incorporate self-adjusting tensioners, while manyaftermarket kits use a manual tensioning system consisting of adjustablerod ends. Most serpentine systems incorporate one or more idler pulleysthat reduce the belt travel between accessories and allow the belt tofollow a closed loop. Ideally, you don't want to have more than 18inches between accessories or you increase the chances of belt flap, which can cause the belt to be thrown. The main advantage to the self-adjuster is its ability to keep tension on the belt as it stretchesthrough normal wear. With a manually tensioned system, the belt tensionmust be monitored and adjusted periodically. The biggest mistake when itcomes to manually applying tension on the belt comes fromover-tightening. The belt should not be too tight--about 1/4 inch ofmovement in either direction is good.
Pulley Wrap
If you go with a serpentine-belt conversion, be sure that the kit offersa minimum of 30 percent belt wrap for any given accessory. More isgreat, but anything less may result in thrown belts at high rpm.
