Small-block Fords use a thrust bearing installed on the center (No. 3) bearing saddle. As with all bearings, the proper way to install them is to line up the bearing tang with the notch in the bore and snap the bearing into place. Never install bearings dry; always use assembly lube on the bearing surface. We checked bearing clearances with a dial bore gauge and a micrometer on the rod and main journals, but if you don't have these tools, inexpensive Plastigage, available at most auto parts stores, will suffice. View Related Article
