Ford 302ci Stroker Packages - Performance Parts

Ford's venerable small-block 302 has become increasing popular, and it's especially apparent with the thriving aftermarket that's offering every imaginable bolt-on component right over the counter. Let's face it, making horsepower with off-the-shelf parts is easy. The tougher question is how deep are your pockets?
Still, the best way to make more power is with a larger engine. Several reputable manufacturers have already developed killer stroker packages that'll kick the small-block up a notch. By simply increasing the displacement with a stroker kit, you get the power and torque without having to build an exotic engine. Sure, stepping up to a 351W would be nice, but unless you're willing to incur the costs for a new manifold, distributor, oil pan, and headers to complete the conversion, you'll find that stroking the 302 is a more affordable alternative.
If you're wondering how difficult it is, you'll be happy to know that stroking the 302 to displace up to 347 ci isn't any more difficult than doing a basic rebuild. However, you do need to know that since the factory 3.00-inch-stroke crankshaft will be replaced with a stronger and longer-armed 3.400-inch unit along with replacing the 5.090-inch-length rod with longer 5.400-inch pieces (see 302 Stroker Combination sidebar), the base of the cylinder walls will have to be notched in order to clear the rod and rod bolts. Keep in mind this can be accomplished with a die-grinder, but it's easier to farm it out to a machine shop for a nominal fee.
The hardest decision is trying to determine which stroker package is the right one for you. In reality, every manufacturer that we've sourced here offers incredible kits with high-quality stroker crankshafts with a choice of H- or I-beam rods along with premium pistons. If you want to build your own engine, there are rotating assemblies for under $1,000. Or, if you simply want to replace your high-mileage engine, you also have the option of purchasing everything from basic short-blocks to complete long-blocks with your choice of camshaft, heads, and induction system. So if you've ever wondered what a stroker can do for you, follow along as we show you what's available and what you can expect out of one of these brutal combinations with real-world results.
Building a Coast High Performance 347We can't say enough good things about Coast High Performance (CHP) in Torrance, California. What you may not know is that it's the only manufacturer to offer a smog-friendly 302 stroker package, dubbed the 347-E, that comes with an Executive Order number, making it 50-state emissions-legal for '88-'95 5.0L Mustangs! If you've never seen one go together, check it out as we learned some of the basics from engine-builder Dennis Lightle as we caught him assembling one of these bullets.
