The 1998 Camaro&8217s front-end treatment might take some getting used to, but knowing that LS1 power is behind it does make it look better. New up front are the hood, fenders, front fascia, and special composite headlights with reflector optics for better night visibility. The standard hood looks the same but lacks the air-inlet opening.

Frankly, the LS1 engine doesn’t look as good as the Corvette’s, which has plastic covers. But what it lacks in form it easily makes up for in function. With a 320hp (remember, that’s a net rating) press into the seatback, it’s a mid-13-second ride that can easily go door-to-door with the world&8217s best.

While the 17x9-inch wheels are the same as the 1996/1997 SS cars, the SS emblems in the center have been replaced by a Bow Tie emblem. Also new for 1998 are Goodyear Eagle F1 tires in an SS-specific P275/40ZR17 size all around. Standard Z28 and V-6 Camaro models make do with 16-inch wheels and tires.

The SS cold-air induction system works like this: Air enters from the scoop in the top of the hood. It then winds around to either side of the air inlet through the underside of the hood. Just in front of the hood-latch mechanism on the underside of the hood are several holes that mate to an opening at the front of the air filter box. This system is mostly responsible for the 15hp jump in the SS LS1&8217s output rating to 320 hp, compared with 305 hp for standard Z28s.
