1972 Chevy Nova SS - A Bid for Victory - Building the eBay Editor's Challenge Nova

25 Grand, a deadline and a race. Sounds straightforward, right? It's not as easy as it sounds. Follow along as we go into the details of our eBay Editor's Challenge Nova.

It seemed like a dream gig at first: Take $25,000 of someone else's money and buy the car of your choice, plus as many parts and pieces to fix it up as the rest of the budget would allow. That's the way the eBay Motors Editor's Charity Challenge came across to most of us here when it was first announced. Sure there were details, like the part about buying everything on eBay Motors (most of us spend too much time there anyway), the mention of a competition at the conclusion of the project (giving us a reason to abuse the car built with someone else's money), the four-month deadline (there's always a catch), and the fact that the cars would later be auctioned on eBay Motors for charity (easy come, easy go). But we were focused on the bit about buying lots of stuff.

The strategy of the Bow Tie Bad Boys team was wise: Find a muscle-era Chevy that's already in good condition and use the balance of the budget to make it better. This Nova purchased by Chevy High's Bob Mehlhoff was a perfect choice, as it met the aforementioned criteria while leaving plenty of budget to play with. Plus, it was local. The Nova's recent orange coat was quite nice, even close up. The cameras love it. The interior was redone in stock style but with tweed inserts, and the 327 had mild performance upgrades. Even the suspension was sound. This Nova is a true SS.

One of the teams we followed was the Bow Tie Bad Boys, a conglomeration of staffers from Chevy High Performance, Super Chevy, Popular Hot Rodding, and Car Craft, though the project was really handled by Chevy High's Bob Mehlhoff, while the wrenching and such was carried out by the guys at Johns Customz and Performance in Torrance, California. From the get go the team agreed that the car selected should not only be a Chevy, but a muscle-era example, and one that wasn't a complete basket case. With 25 large to spend, there seemed to be enough funding to procure a decent car and then make it even better.

Of course, with the way prices for classic musclecars have been climbing, the $25,000 budget didn't seem so grand once the search began. Mehlhoff worked it out by finding a '72 Nova SS that had already been treated to a list of enhancements; it was also local, so he could check it out and take delivery without the hassle of shipping. Of primary importance was the body and paint-the team didn't want to get into any restoration fiascos, given the time constraints. The Nova fit the bill perfectly, with camera-friendly orange paint and black stripes that actually looked good even up close. The interior had also been redone, and the drivetrain was sound, albeit mild.

A plan was laid out to treat the Nova to upgraded suspension and brakes, and before it was all over, an engine swap was added for good measure. The assigned goal was to bring the car to a competition where all 10 of the Editor's Challenge teams would vie for top honors using a variety of vehicles. Take a look at the improvements made to the Nova here, then flip to the piece on the Editor's Challenge to see how it stacked up. Meanwhile, scheming for next year's event has already begun.

The Nova was delivered to Johns Customz in Torrance, California, where the upgrade work would be done. Johns is a full-service facility for performance vehicles, handling all manner of restoration and modification. Upon arrival, the Nova was given the once-over to determine exactly what it already had and what it would need.

The Nova's suspension was in decent shape, but in preparation for slalom competition, the stock upper and lower control arms were pulled and replaced with tubular pieces from Global West. The springs were also swapped for Hotchkis performance coils to firm up the rate while slightly lowering the car.

A Hotchkis sway bar worked with a pair of Edelbrock shocks to finish off the front suspension. This setup should improve handling dramatically over the spindly stock sway bar and the parts store replacement shocks that were here previously.

While they were at it, the guys at Johns also installed a set of Baer Racing 13-inch front brakes. The Baer kit contains everything needed for the swap, including new hubs already fitted with new Timken wheel bearings packed with Redline synthetic grease. The drilled and slotted 13-inch rotors slip over the wheel studs, and aluminum Baer dual-piston calipers squeeze SBS performance pads. This should give the Nova a leg up in the braking test.

  • Ebay Challenge Nova 10 Bolt Rebuild
Out back, the original 8.5-inch 10-bolt rear was removed so that an Eaton limited-slip differential from The Gear Shop in Long Beach, California, could be installed. A set of 3.73:1 gears, also from The Gear Shop, would be mounted to the new diff as well. While the rear was out, Hotchkis leaf springs were added and would be complemented by a Hotchkis rear sway bar and another pair of Edelbrock shocks.

The stock axles were then reinstalled and the new 12-inch rotors slipped over the axle flanges. Aluminum PBR single-piston calipers with integral parking-brake mechanisms were installed when it was all back together. The Baer kit also included new cables to mate the calipers with the Nova's parking-brake linkage.

Using high-performance brakes provided the perfect excuse to upgrade the rolling stock, since the 15-inch Rallys won't clear the larger rotors and calipers. A set of 17-inch ROH Sniper rims was procured via eBay along with a set of Sumitomo tires.

  • Ebay Challenge Nova 383 Stroker
The previous owner had equipped the Nova with a decent 327 engine running rebuilt stock iron heads, a mild cam, and an aftermarket carb and intake. It ran, but seemed to have a persistent overheating problem. Rather than messing with an unknown on a tight schedule, the team decided to take the opportunity to obtain a fresh engine, and while they were at it, to go for more cubes. So a 383-inch stroker short-block was purchased on eBay Motors from Dyno-Flo Performance in Las Vegas. The engine was spec'd with Probe forged pistons, Eagle forged 5.7-inch rods and a 3.75-inch-stroke crank.

Edelbrock heads were installed using ARP head bolts and Fel-Pro gaskets. A set of Comp Cams stainless roller-rocker arms was also used. Finally, the engine was topped with an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake manifold and Edelbrock Performer 750-cfm carb. These parts were purchased on eBay Motors from Unlimited Speed Performance Parts.

The crew at Johns slipped the new small-block into the Nova, bolting it up to the existing Turbo 350 trans and 11-inch converter. The headers from the 327 were junk, so a new set of Hooker Comp 151/48-inch tubes was later obtained and installed by Pacific Muffler & Alignment. They were merged with the existing dual exhaust with turbo mufflers.

After prior experiences with the Nova overheating, the team opted for some added insurance in the form of a Be Cool aluminum radiator and twin Spal electric fans. Once the engine was running and broken in, the car would run almost too cool at around 170 degrees F most of the time. Problem solved.

  • Ebay Challenge Nova Goodmark Steel Cowl Hood
Although one of the team's stratagems was to avoid body and paint work at all costs, they did make one concession by swapping the stock flat hood for one of Goodmark's steel cowl-induction pieces. Our experience with these has shown good fitment, and the added intake clearance was welcome with our taller manifold. And it looks cool. Johns Customz matched the paint beautifully. Once the car was back together and running, all that remained was to get some seat time and dial in the engine.
