1965 Chevrolet El Camino - Take The Ultimate Road Trip
Just to prove we were there,... Just to prove we were there, we took a quick jog through downtown Vegas. It was already over 90 degrees by 10 a.m., and when the temp gauge hit 220, we beat it back out on the road. | Even with the push to make... Even with the push to make it into Colorado the first day, we couldn't resist a detour past Dwight's Auto Wrecking in Sigurd, Utah, off I-70. It took hours to get that nasty red clay out of the inner wheelwells. | Some of the prettiest scenic... Some of the prettiest scenic views are just east of I-15 on I-70 in Utah in the Fishlake National Forest. This is the overlook at the San Rafael Swell. | Our good friend Scott Gillman... Our good friend Scott Gillman lives in Crested Butte, Colorado, which is way south of I-70 but worth the detour. We met up with him out on the road with his '64 427 four-speed Corvette he co-owns with his buddy Robert Schultz. Scott has worked for Baer, Hotchkis, and Gale Banks and now owns a welding and fabrication company. | After mounting two new front... After mounting two new front tires in Grand Junction, we stopped in Montrose just long enough for this shot in front of the local Air National Guard airport. That's a '60s vintage Vought A-7 Corsair II. Graham's grandfather was a U.S. Marine Corps A-4 driver, so military aircraft are always a good excuse to stop. | While we were houseguests,... While we were houseguests, we also performed front and rear wheelwell trim work after having sliced the right front tire the day before. Scott trimmed the rear wheelwells to give the 255/60R15 rear tires more clearance. We ended up putting smaller 225/60R15s on the front. | After 1,900 miles, a cut tire,... After 1,900 miles, a cut tire, and an abused credit card as souvenirs, we finally arrived at our destination-Jefferson, Iowa. Does the courthouse look like it's straight out of the movie Back to the Future? | After staying the night in... After staying the night in Castle Rock with Gene and Crissy Christensen, Gene introduced us to Brian Pacheco, who owns a repair shop in Elizabeth, Colorado. We discovered that our spare wheel wouldn't clear the front disc-brake hubs, so Brian traded us a steel wheel that would fit. Brian also owns a nice '69 Firebird convertible. | |
