The 350 H.O. Deluxe engine that we tested came from GM Performance Parts complete with a 600-cfm Holley carb, dual-plane intake, HEI distributor, spark plugs, wires, even a water pump. With iron Vortec heads and a mild cam, Chevy rates this engine at 330 hp. With headers and mufflers, our 350 H.O. made 348 hp at 5,200 and 388 lb-ft of torque at 4,000.

With an Edelbrock Performer RPM and a Holley 750-cfm double-pumper carb, best power from last month measured out at 370 hp and 409 lb-ft of torque, so we figured it could really benefit from a cam change. We swapped in a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 268 cam and lifters that offered an additional 12 degrees of duration and a slight lift improvement. Power improved with the cam, but only slightly.

We decided a hydraulic roller might offer some power advantages, so we opted for the GM Performance Parts hydraulic roller Hot cam and kit complete with pushrods, springs, retainers, and a set of GMPP guided roller rockers. The rockers are matched to the cam and offer an improved 1.6:1 ratio.

While the roller cam kit comes with better LT4-style springs, we decided to use a set of Comp Cams beehive springs since they drop right into place, offer the potential for better valve control, and can accommodate additional lift all without additional machining...

...These springs and matching retainers are considerably more expensive, but are well worth the investment.
