It's 20 Better Than Death Race 2000!Paul W.S. Anderson, the creative force behind such cinematic train wrecks as Alien vs. Predator and Event Horizon has announced that he will write and direct a remake of the '75 cult classic Death Race 2000. Of course Death Race 2000 was that cheesy flick starring David Carradine and a pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone careening around America in a road race that gave bonus points for taking out pedestrians. But it knew it was trash and it was funny right down to the fiberglass-bodied VWs that made up the race cars.
Anderson promises his version will be different. "Set in 2020," he told Variety, "our film is an ultra-violent, no-holds-barred race with heavily armed Escalades, Ferraris, and Aston Martins." Yawn. Chances of this film sucking: 110 percent. If it gets made (here's hoping another of our childhood favorites isn't trampled upon), expect it on screens around the summer of next year.-John Pearley Huffman
Time To Clean The ShopSeen this '84 Camaro before? It belongs to John Nelson over at Chevy High Performance magazine and it has been wedged between Car Craft projects at the shop for as long as we can remember. It doesn't move, and as far as we can tell, the best mod so far has been a two-week install of an ignition switch. We were about two seconds away from putting a 6-71 on this car with a Sawzall hood mod and driving it to a swap meet when we realized that John probably wouldn't like that. Instead, we'll try to sell it for him. Send your best offer to carcraft@primedia.com and we will be happy to forward it to him and see if he is interested. Make it high; he loves this thing. Also Sales VP John W. Cobb III's Mustang convertible is in the way, so go ahead and send us an offer for that too.
Motorsports Welding SchoolWith all the affordable welding equipment available now, the only good excuse for not owning one is that you don't know how to weld. Lincoln Electric has a solution for you: the '05 Motorsports Welding School. This week-long class held in the company's Technology Center in Cleveland, Ohio, will introduce you to the basics of TIG, MIG, gas, and even plasma-cutting techniques in addition to metals classes so you know a little bit about the material you will be welding. This class is aimed at the occasional home and motorsports welder and fabricator. You'll spend 70 percent of your time welding, and the rest learning how to apply those newfound skills. There's even an advanced class for those who want to learn more. The Basic class is $655, but if you enroll in Lincoln Electric's Motorsports Team, the cost is $475-just sign up online at lincolnelectric.com. The classes sell out quickly since there are only 15 spots per class, so you'd better hustle.-Jeff Smith
