Troy gave us a convenient little rundown of the slick mods on the bod of the 'Bu: Shaved trunk lock and emblems (the trunk's now opened with a Honda trunk release), an '82 Malibu nose, a Harwood cowl hood, sectioned and narrowed front and rear bumpers, a molded box in the front bumper for the plate, Toyota Celica door handles, and an El Camino front spoiler. Troy and his dad, Mike, painted the car themselves.

"I've had this car since I started driving. It has been finished three times. Each time I've found new technology and other things to improve on." That pretty much sums up Troy Stogdill's outlook on this '81 Malibu-a car that he says was built for about 15 grand. Is that a lot? Could be. Is that a lot for blown small-block power, really nice paint, an overdrive trans, toss-out-the-boat-anchor Baer brakes, and nice wheels and tires? Not really. Troy spent his money in the right places to come up with this relatively basic but still pretty sweet street cruiser for commuting between home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and work at HP Motorsport, in Omaha, Nebraska.

Eibach springs, Koni shocks, a quick-ratio Z28 steering box, front 1 1/8-inch and rear 7/8-inch antisway bars, polyurethane bushings, and HP Motorsport upper and lower rear control arms help make short work of the twisties. Troy paid generous attention to the brakes, rims, and skins. Baer Racing Baer Claw brakes, which use C4 Corvette PBR calipers with 12-inch rotors at each corner, put the halt to Weld Split Six wheels and BFG Comp TA ZR donuts. The front wheels are 16x7s and the rears are 16x8s, while the rubber sizes out to P225/50ZR16s in front and P255/50ZR16s at the tail. The rear tires get the engine's power from a 7.5-inch 10-bolt with an Auburn diff and 3.73:1 gears.

The '73 355 small-block gets a bit of extra air from a B&M 144 supercharger cranking out 6 psi of boost. Atop the huffer is a Holley 750 fixed up by JET Performance Fuel Systems. Freshened up by Troy, the super-basic 9.0:1 small-block doesn't have anything you haven't heard of a million times before: a little clean-up port work on the heads, a Comp Cams 268 hydraulic cam, an HEI, Hedman headers, and a Borla exhaust system. Troy estimates about 350 hp, which sounds about right.

  • Troy Stogdills 1981 Chevy Malibu Mostly Stock Interior
Troy didn't really go wild with the Visa on the interior, but it still looks good. Other than the custom console to house the Auto Meter gauges, there's nothing really fancy about Camaro seats, a Grant wheel, and a B&M Pro Stick shifter controling a TH700-R4 trans.
