Thirty years ago, manufacturers allowed magazine guys to not only abuse new vehicles, but modify them as well. Shortly after the press junket that introduced the then-new '76 CJ7 Jeep, CC staff guys begged for a black-on-black model so they could, you guessed it, add flames. And . . . wait for it . . . big tires and wheels. Staff dude Bruce Caldwell proved that he could drive more than a quarter-mile at a time by plowing full throttle over the river and through the woods.
