Cruisin' Las Vegas
It doesn't seem possible that I was the new guy when the CC staff invaded Las Vegas for another installment of Car Craft's Cruisin' USA series that appeared in the May '80 issue. I was at Editor Jon Asher's command and third-string backup for Neil Britt's outstanding night-cruising photography. This photo is one outtake of several choreographies of fender-flared Camaros, Firebirds, and Corvettes staged that night.

The one memory seared into my brain from that night is that wearing a bright-yellow Car Craft staff jacket on Fremont Street became the closest I'll ever get to rock star status. It was way too much for a kid barely out of Iowa. My only other recollection is being down to my last $4 on a slot machine buried in one of the casinos on Fremont Street and hitting three bars across the machine and the sound of $100 worth of coins hitting the tray. That was the first and last time I gambled in Vegas-if you don't count those 120-mph blasts in a '65 Chevelle on the old Las Vegas Speedway road course. But that's another story.
