The Camaro went 13.30 from the factory and was featured in Hot Rod magazine as a build. It went as fast as 10.60 with the stock LS1 short-block. The next step was expensive. To get the Camaro into the low 10s, Jud Massingill added an LS6 short-block and heads, then changed the engine again to a C5-R block that displaced 427 inches to get the car into the low 9s. The engine in the photo is the C5-R from the '07 NMCA finals in Memphis.

The students love the '99 Camaro SS. Jud ordered it from Chevrolet in 1999 without the floppy T-tops because he knew it was going to be a race car.

During the '08 finals, Jud decided to add a cool dual-throttle-body setup that at first seemed to be allowed. The rules said one Dominator-style carb or any EFI was permitted, but an NMCA official quickly decided Jud's EFI constituted two Dominators. The penalty was an additional 75 pounds added to his car. Because the Camaro was already heavy, he complained and the NMCA reduced the penalty to 25 pounds as long as all the other racers were allowed to shed 50 pounds off their race cars. Jud later told us the duals added about 40 hp.

Normally, the torque arm mounts to the transmission tailshaft and the differential housing. SAM's chassis tuner, instructor, and really nice guy, John Harrison, built this crossmember, which takes the load off the transmission and can be moved up or down to adjust the vehicle's instant center.

The rear differential is a Ford 9-inch with 5.14 gears. The orange tab next to the driveshaft is a speed sensor used to measure the driveshaft speed against the engine speed to see if the clutch is slipping. And it was.

The T56 is long gone, so John had to modify this BMR crossmember to fit the Jericho four-speed.

On a race car, you don't need gallons of fuel and you don't want the extra weight. The 427 has a 15.25:1 static compression ratio, so the minitank gets the high-octane race gas.
