KEEP IT SIMPLE
Who: Norm Hodgkinson
What: '65 Dodge Coronet
Where: Chico, CA
Why: This Coronet has run a best of 11.46 at 118 mph with a 440-inch big-block, proving you don't need nitrous or a monster motor to run a respectable time. Edelbrock Performer RPM heads are a key ingredient to power, but what is more surprising is what is not done. The rear suspension is unmodified, and it uses a stone-stock points distributor and old-school Mopar solid cam with 0.590 lift to help the 3,500-pound Coronet scoot down the track. The only track-oriented parts are a 4.56:1-geared 831/44 rear and a 727 TorqueFlite with a manual valvebody.
He Says: "I towed the car away 10 years ago for $200 with no motor and have maybe $8,000 in it since then, including the paint."

MAKES GOIN' FAST TOO EASY
Who: Ronnie Barnes
What: '98 Camaro SS (SLP)
Where: Lansing, MI
Why: Ronnie tells us that he fills up with pump gas, gets 28 mpg driving to the dragstrip, then runs 13.20 on street tires and 12.70 on slicks. He makes as many runs as he wants, then waves to the guys who are loading up their trailers and cruises home with the A/C on. The same car gets Ronnie to work on Monday. It has the factory LS1 engine with an SLP PerformancePac exhaust system, a new MAF sensor, a low-temperature thermostat, and the factory six-speed.
