'Behind The Scenes
Cruising a local Saturday sale at famous Cobra-owner Lynn Parks' garage, we spotted this interesting 390 FE Ford long-block with what looks like a road-race-style oil pan. It sold for a mere $250 including the engine stand.
Tach o' Memories
Apparently there's a big push for '60s-era tachometers. A pal recently bought this 8,000-rpm Sun tach for more than he was willing to admit. So, dig 'em out of the parts bin and make a few bucks before the market is flooded. Tech Editor Smith used to own a Dixco Big Daddy Don Garlits tach with a red-, white-, and blue-painted cup (just after the discovery of electricity), and those are going for some serious coin right now.
While we were out on the Comet road trip, we developed some rules that didn't fit in the story. Here they are:*Always downshift; be the first car in your group to the top of long hills
*Always wave at other street machines
*Always let truckers in
*Flash your lights to let truckers know they are clear to merge in front of you
*Never pass on the right
*If you are in the fast lane, make sure you are passing
*Wear cargo pants on long trips
*Eat beef jerky
*If possible, buy chrome aviator glasses and wear them at all times
*Go to really big truck stops and check the music in the bargain bin
*Never eat fast food
*Talk to people
