`BEHIND THE SCENES
The backdrop for the lead shot in "Living Large" (page 36) this month is Smith's longtime-coming shop. It's not yet complete, but it's already not big enough for all the crap he's collected over the years.
Missed It By That Much --Again...
At the Year One Experience, the Year One folks invited all the journalists to compete in an autocross event. With more than 20 journalists competing, staffer Smith had the lead until the very end, when he was beat out by 0.007 second for top honors. We conveniently forgot the winner's name.
The FE Score!
OK, so we haven't scored it yet, but we have been trying to talk to the aging owner of this Mercury S55 that has been parked down the street since October of last year. The tires are slowly going flat, and the cobwebs and leaf buildup indicated it isn't going to go anywhere without our help. Why do we care? It has 428 badges. That is the crown jewel of pedestrian FE engines, hopefully ours for the plucking.
Chrysler 360 score!
We stumbled upon a '76 Newport with a tasty-fresh 360 that was squeaky clean with a stock bore. Look for it in a couple of months with a radical A-body recipe.
IN THE FAIRLANE
This is the '64 Fairlane whose engine was featured in Horsepower! in July '06. Don and Scott Crouse are building the car to run in PSCA competition. It should be a handful with 1,300 hp on tap and a 1012-inch tire.
