Don couldn’t tell us what’s inside the engine, but we can tell you what’s hanging from it: aluminum heads, a Holley carb and high-volume mechanical fuel pump, a GM HEI distributor, a GM polished aluminum six-blade water pump, and a GM mini-starter. The Hooker 1-5/8-inch headers are attached to 2-1/4-inch dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers for that extra tinny reverberation that sends real men into fits of jealousy.

The interior of Don’s Camaro makes an impression. It says “Ha, ha, ha! Your interior sucks!” Or at least that’s what we were thinking after we saw the stunning gray leather Fiero seats with speakers built directly into the headrests. That’s right, speakers in the headrests, ladies and gentleman. The Kenwood sound system includes an in-dash hidden CD player. Talk about cool. The dash was repadded in gray leather and Auto Meter gauges were added along with the Grant 14-inch steering wheel. Don had 6 inches cut out of the back seat to make room for the armrest. That’s also nice to have, so we’re told.

Just about every car nut knows what it’s like to fantasize about owning a cherry red ’69 Camaro. Your heart flutters as one rumbles past you on the boulevard. You daydream about what it feels like to turn the key and feel the engine roar to life…your eyes left to linger on the black speed stripes as you put it into gear. Admit it—you aren’t peeking into driveways as you ride by houses looking for new projects! You’re hoping to find an unmolested first-gen that some old lady would like to get rid of so you can make it into your own project or sell it. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to say, “No, no, I want a four-speed in my Camaro,” or “Hmm. I think I’ll add speakers inside my headrests.” How you envy the man who gets to drive one every single weekend. His name is Don Brynestad, and his ’69 Camaro is so familiar…we just know we’ve seen it someplace before…maybe in our dreams. No wait—it was at the Car Craft Nationals in Minneapolis.
