Too Spotless To Be Driven? They Don't Even Own A Trailer!

The Bel Air has the stock rearend with 3.08 gears, a short-extension Turbo 400 tranny with a B&M shift-improvement kit, and a Hurst Quarter Stick shifter. It stops effectively with Camaro 11-inch-rotor disc brakes up front and stock drums out back. The two-door hardtop retains all its stock trim, and the PPG Sapphire Blue and Ivory Pearl paint makes it easy to understand why Kevin loves the ’56 body style.

The 17-inch Billet Specialties Manta Ray wheels complement the lowered stance, wrought with 2-inch-drop spindles in the front and 3-inch lowering blocks in the back. The car manages frequent road trips (up to 1,200 miles!) comfortably with KYB shocks all around.

The street-rod–style shoebox has a worked-over 350 with a steel crank, Speed-Pro 10.0:1 pistons and rings, a Comp 270HR Magnum cam with 215/215-degree duration at 0.050, Dart Iron Eagle heads with 2.02/1.6-inch valves, an Edelbrock Performer intake, a Holley 750 carb, an MSD 6A distributor, Sanderson cast-iron coated headers, and Flowmaster two chamber mufflers. Kevin guesstimates 360 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. He keeps this prudently powered pavement pounder cool and under control by way of two fans, one electrical and one mechanical.

Kevin cruises to the grocery store while simultaneously destroying his hearing, groovin’ to the tunes from his 10-speaker, 200-amp Pioneer sound system. Sitting on beautifully upholstered tweed and leather seats, he delightedly registers his speed exceeding the local limits on the Dakota digital dash.

The car is used for everything from in-law visits to cruising the Hot August Nights car show in Reno, Nevada, and the only time it ever rode a trailer was when the Ukestad’s brought it home to Watsonville, California, for the first time.

Walking by this ’56 Chevy at a car show, you might derisively think “Trailer Queen.” It seems like at every cruise night or car event there’s at least one drop-dead-gorgeous car that makes you stop and wonder if its tires have ever consorted with pavement. Has it been driven beyond the end of the driveway? You sneer.

Walking away with a feeling of superiority that owning a beater is way cooler than being over protective about some powder-puff dream car, you still feel a nagging jealousy lingering in the back of your car-subconscious mind. After walking past this ’56 Chevy Bel Air several times at the Goodguys All-American Get-Together in Pleasanton, California, we finally couldn’t contain ourselves. We had to ask Kevin and Zizi Ukestad about their car’s “trailer towed” background. Turns out they don’t even own a trailer and the car’s only intended purpose is driving fun.

So much for first impressions.
