This Guy's Garage - Darrell Crum Fort Pierce, FL

By Geoff Stunkard, Photography by Geoff Stunkard

The region north of Palm Beach, Florida's white-sand beaches goes from ultra-posh to real country pretty quickly. Fort Pierce is just off the Atlantic coast, and once you leave the shoreline, it's an area home to wild boars, orange groves, and car guys. That's where we met Darrell Crum, a long-time Mopar guy, who is noted around the region for having a collection of hard-to-find parts. When we visited, we discovered that not all of the treasure was buried by the pirates who once raided the nearby settlements.

A. The Crossing Guard is a Coca-Cola item that schools would roll out into the street to slow cars down during school days, long before today's flashing yellow caution lights. "This poor fella took a few hits but is still standing."

B. Darrell's OEM pride and joy is this original numbers-matching '691⁄2 A12 lift-off hood 440 Six Pack Super Bee, one of only 153 cars, making this the lowest production of all the A12 lift-off hood cars. Indeed, Darrell's is the only known Six Pack Bee to exist in the rare A4 Platinum paint code and stripe-delete

C. This is an original 1970 Plumb Crazy Challenger convertible with a 383, and it is one of 211 built that year. In process, the Challenger now has a 5.7L crate Hemi with a Tremec five-speed and an XV Motorsports full Level 2 front and rear suspension package.

D. The surfboard hanging from the rafters is a 1969 Gordon and Smith Long Board, aka the "Battleship."

E. This under-construction 1971 Challenger is equipped with a hot 440 wedge backed by a Hemi four-speed tranny. Both are hooked up to an original 4.10:1-geared Dana 60. The car sports a T/A hood to clear the high-rise intake, with a T/A spoiler and rear window louvers.

F. This is an original-paint 1968 Lemon Peeler, which was the first year that Schwinn came out with these chopper-style bikes. "In 1968, if you weren't old enough to drive a muscle car, you had to ride a muscle bike, and if it wasn't a Schwinn with a Pea Picker front end, you just weren't cool." Darrell's childhood 1960 John Deere pedal tractor was restored in 1985.

G. A true survivor of the 1970s, this was an unrestored barn find that sat for 30 years before Darrell bought it from the original builder. A real 1969 A56 Code 340 'Cuda package, it is one of only 166 made and features a replacement block 340 and Dyers-prepped 6-71 Street Blower. He also has the factory 340 that was pulled in 1976 for the rebuild. Before we left, he showed us it could still smoke those monster N50 rear tires, too.

H. The old Sinclair gas pump is from the 1950s with the matching air station.

Multiple lifts, at least 1 pit. Full set of Craftsman, Kobalt, Snap On. Arx, MIG, & TIG welders. Seperate paint booth with fume scrubber on the side. Wheel Dyno in one of the bays. A/C for the shop & office. Proper haz-fluid storage tanks. My own gas pump & tank filled w/ 93 octane + cases of lead substitute in the back room. A 70 Superbird, 56 Lincoln MK II, 63 Lincoln Continental "suicide door", a '12 Shelby Super Snake, and Buick Regal GNX R in the garage bays. Plus a good Ford F-250 dually for parts runs, towing, and a car carrier for shows. My tastes are simple. I want the best.

Just like Tony Stark gave to the Young Boy in Ironman 3. Not Ridgeland Valley Hunt Club or Ridgeland Waterfront Estates. That would flood to Canada & Lake Oakachobie Stowbie, Florida: this is the Monacacy Valley Tidal Basin! Sheesh
