Swaim also took CC readers for a vicarious ride on Don Prudhomme’s Shelby Super Snake dragster in June 1968. He mounted a Nikon 35mm camera equipped with an innovative new motor drive in front of the engine. Swaim hooked his finger around a switch mounted on the dragster’s pushbar, activating the camera’s motor drive when Prudhomme launched the car. The camera recorded 36 exposures in nine seconds, and Swaim got his shot in one take. The intrepid photographer is barely visible behind the clouds of tire smoke in this iconic centerspread.
