The world’s leader in collector car sales, Mecum Auction, hosted a record breaking auction in the Chicago, Illinois, area recently. The 26-year company had a record high number of bidders at the Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, October 10-12, 2013, where it auctioned 965 cars, 615 of which sold. Those numbers combined for a 64 percent sell-through rate and $18,634,223 in sales. Mecum is known for selling 15,000 vehicles per year.

What we find most impressive about the auction at the Schaumburg Convention Center this month is how many of the top-sellers were American-made. The most expensive car sold at the auction near Chicago was a 1963 Harley Earl Corvette. This one-of-a-kind Stingray was gifted by GM Vice President of Design, Earl, and sold for $1.5 million. The second highest price sale went to a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. With only 23 of just 69 built in 1969, the original factory ZL1 sold for $500,000. A great day to be a Chevy fan, eh?

The 3rd highest priced car that sold at the Mecum Schaumburg auction was a 2005 Ford GT. The one-owner car, with a mere 2,047 miles on the odometer, sold for $240,000. Not too shabby for a limited edition American super car.

Here is the list of top-10 hammer prices from the auction:

  • 1963 Harley J. Earl Corvette - $1,500,000
  • 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 - $500,000
  • 2005 Ford GT - $240,000
  • 1965 Shelby Cobra, CSX4337 - $140,000
  • 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible - $135,000
  • 1968 Dodge Hemi Dart Lightweight - $125,000
  • 1969 Pontiac Trans Am - $118,000
  • 1962 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible - $110,000
  • 2013 Chevrolet COPO Camaro - $105,000
  • 1951 Willys Overland Custom Pickup - $100,000

In case you’re interested to see when the next classic muscle cars auction occurs, Mecum’s next classic and collector car auction will be at the Anaheim Convention Center Nov. 21-23 featuring 750 vehicles. Stay tuned, we’ll let you know what the classics sell for there, too.
