Bogosity Abounds
Here's an outtake we spotted in the photo file from the '73 NHRA Winternationals that didn't find its way into CC that year. Perhaps this setup wheelie shot was intended for the May '73 cover, but the jackstands propping these phony wheelstands proved too tough for the retoucher. Even so, Ken Van Cleave's Dart Sport (left) and Barry Setzer's Vega both appeared inside the issue that-aside from stories on four-banger hop-ups, eight-tracks, and smog technology-was packed with loads of Pro Stock tech. The mag revealed all the latest tricks and trends, then lampooned them just one issue later with Rick "Jeremy Clydesdale" Voegelin's story about the Car Craft Infrared Hyperbolic Discriminatory Analyzer, better known as the Pro Stock Bogosity Meter. It pinpointed such bogus Pro Non-Stock trends as narrowed bumpers, shaved driprails, and drooped fenders. When pointed at Setzer's Vega, "the needle broke off the scale." Pro Stock purity and Car Craft humor fell off the map the very next issue.
