Flying Without Wings

This '64 Chevy II is the proud property of Chris Guthery of Arab, Alabama. It's powered by a 555ci Chevy with two stages of direct-port nitrous by Applied Nitrous Technologies. Chris runs in the Outlaw Racing Street Car Association's Limited Street class, where he has to weigh 3,200 pounds and run on true 10.5 tires (no W's allowed). And no wheelie bars! Guthery wanted a car that would stand out in a crowd, and from the looks of this photo sequence it appears to be a smashing success. A broken shock, bent rims, and a broken driver-side A-arm were the casualties of this wild launch. The car has run a best of 5.20 at 137 in the eighth-mile, and Guthery says, "That was on seven cylinders because we burnt a piston on that pass." Chris has high hopes to run 5.0s and knock on the 4-second door from time to time, and he's installed a new MSD Digital 7 ignition system to calm the launches down and accelerate the car more forward then vertical.

This kind of action is typical of an ORSCA event, as there are many cars with gobs more horsepower than the poor little tires can handle. For information on where you can see Chris' Chevy II wagon and more of these untamed beasts run, visit ORSCA's Web site at outlawracing.com.
