Supercharged Studebakers were nothing new in 1963 (Stude had offered McCulloch-blown cars since 1957), but this Avanti’s Jet Thrust 289 V8 packs the optional Paxton beltdriven huffer, which upped output from 240 to 285 hp. Though a BorgWarner T-10 four-speed was offered, this one’s backed by a BorgWarner three-speed slushbox. The enthusiast press loved the Avanti and 3,884 were sold in 1963. Unfortunately, the rest of the tired lineup was a showroom dud and Studebaker ceased automobile production in 1966.
