Bench Build - February 2014

Why Project Cars Take Forever

When is the Demon going to be done? I hear that from everyone; readers, management, sales guys, my mom. The guys who don't ask are usually the crusty wrenches that have many, many project cars under their belts. They know better. The hardest car to build is the one that is both fast and beautiful, and one you do yourself. Technology has allowed me to look back at the dates from every photo and video I've taken of the 1971 Dodge Demon project car all the way up to today. Here's the time line, I hope it answers the question, "Is it done?" Here's why it ain't.

In my case it is exclusively lack of money that keeps my Z/28 a project.

Project cars are great because they give you a sense of accomplishment every day. You can dare to dream big and see your dreams come true. Projects take so long because they happen in their own time not always yours. Can't get discouraged about how far along it should be or where you think it should be by now. Progress is progress even at small steps forward. Money can be a big part of it too. Save up buy a part at a time if you got to. Work extra hours and side jobs but don't stop.

no real reason to take so long ..it's your job ...your parts are probably free... access to great facilities and special services just like we real guys in our cold cramped garage

Mostly it's the money. Or not being able to do the work yourself. Planning all the driveline, paint, wiring. Only buying parts once.

Because it's better to take your time and get it right the first time. Or at least as close as you can get.
