It’s common knowledge that the Shelby Cobra 427S/C is a much sought after vehicle, so it’s no wonder that kids of all ages would drool over the dream of sitting in one. Now, with the partnership of National Products and the Carroll Shelby Licensing Inc. (CSL), the dream of taking a ride in a Shelby can come true for any kid.
“One of the earliest photos of Carroll Shelby is of him as a child in a pedal car,” said Jimmy Chau, V.P. of Sales and Marketing for National Products. “This inspired us to give youngster a chance to follow his footsteps but in something far more powerful, a Shelby Cobra.”
Just announced, CSL will be displaying the Cobra prototype in the Retro Motorsport booth at the Monterey Historic Races. This Cobra will be manufactured and sold to children nationwide. The mirror production kid sized “ride-on” Shelby Cobra 427S/C will reach speeds of 5 mph. They will be built as two editions: the blue or red, ready-to-drive child’s toy; or the limited edition collector’s car. Only 998 of collector’s cars will be produced, each will have working headlamps, the Carroll Shelby’s famous 98 racing number on the side, and a special metallic paint job. The limited edition cars will also receive serial numbers that will be documented in the official Shelby Cobra 427S/C “ride-on” registry.
Each “ride on” Shelby Cobra 427S/C will come with white racing stripes and will cost $299. They will include a battery charger, proportioned chrome wheels, side pipes, rear fender gas cap, roll bar, and official badging. The cars will hold up to 65 lbs; will run for 45 mins on a single charge; and will have 3 gears: forward 2.5 mph, forward 5 mph, and reverse 2.5 mph.
Although Carroll Shelby was dedicated to motor sports, he also had a passion for children that surpassed his need for speed. He was inspired to establish the Carroll Shelby Foundation that continues to provide financial support for children fighting life-threatening illnesses, today.
“National Products will be donating the limited edition No. 98 Shelby Cobra 427 ride-on prototype displayed at Monterey as part of a larger initiative to raise more awareness for the Carroll Shelby Foundation,” said Tracey Smith, Carroll Shelby Licensing president.
Once the little car is officially unveiled, it will hit the road for a tour across the country. The Cobra is scheduled to make an appearance at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas and SEMA. Once it wraps up the tour, it will be available by late October for purchase through select retailers such as Costco or online at Fun Creation. Be sure to snap yours today, your kid will be stoked come Christmas morning.
